Kate

I’m Kate Katharina Ferguson. Originally from Ireland, I now live in Berlin, where I work as a broadcast journalist and write fiction on the side.

My writing story began a long time ago. My mum says that when I was very small, I would draw line after line of swirls across the page, leaving little gaps between the pencil marks as I had seen others do. This was well before I had learnt to identify any letters, let alone to read.

Maybe even back then I felt instinctively that writing is the closest you can get to distilling thought and that stories, more than any other cultural force, are what bind us together.

Transitioning from journalism to fiction has taught me a lot. I’m used to writing precise prose and wrapping things up neatly at the end. Fiction’s not like that. It’s messy and unpredictable and beautiful and scary. In that way, it’s far more like real life.

Right now, I’m working on my first novel. It’s not always easy to keep going. Sometimes it feels like fumbling in the dark inside of a cocoon. But I hope that if I keep tapping away at it, one day a butterfly will emerge. And the story will be ready to take on a life of its own.
