Zoe
I grew up in Perth, Western Australia and spent much of my childhood either knee-deep in the wetlands that surrounded our house or with my head in a book – the mustard-yellow Man and Society volume of our family encyclopedia was a favourite, along with Enid Blyton, Judy Blume and Susan Coolidge.
In 1999 I came to Berlin for the first time and felt strangely at home as I wandered down snowy streets, stumbled into galleries and peered into the starchitect building sites that heralded the city's revival. Four years later I bumped into an old school friend who was born in Berlin, and was soon back again, this time with a friendly local guide. We moved here in 2018 so our children could learn German and feel at home here, too. The city has a unique energy and wildness along with a welcoming writing community, and I can see why so many artists and writers choose to live and work here.
As well as publishing short stories and feature articles I am currently completing my first novel, The Night Village, which will be published in 2021 with Fremantle Press. You can see more of my work at zoedeleuil.com
